Vicky Shan

Hi! My name is Vicky Shan and I am a rising senior at Winston Churchill high school. Through CAPA, I was able to give back to my community, for example, during quarantine, as a part of CAPA JRC, I was able to translate government issued relief packages to local Chinese owned restaurants to get them through hard times.
Additionally during quarantine, I was a member of the ITEACH club, helping seniors with daily conversational English and technology use. Recently my growing and giving club has been successfully promoting plastic bag recycling to more people through setting up recycling bins at Churchill high school every Saturday to take recyclable plastic that parents bring.

Kent Zhang

Hello! I’m Kent Zhang, a sophomore at Wootton High School. I’m very thankful for this opportunity and all the support I’ve received from the Chinese community. I hope to continue working for my community! One way I gave back to the Chinese community was by creating English classes for local Chinese seniors. I helped set up the facilities, curriculums, and teachers. I’ve worked on a tennis ball recycling program, where we collect and recycle used tennis balls. With the help of many volunteers, I hope to make tennis a cleaner sport! To spread my passion for robotics, I’ve helped host classes and seminars for many people. This included young refugees, local middle schools, Boy Scouts, and more.

One of the initiatives I have been involved in is serving as the Aplus Team Leader and an English teacher at iTeach, a youth service organization dedicated to assisting Chinese American seniors. For the past 2 years, in this role, I have taught English to a class of 25+ seniors, focusing on common vocabulary and phrases. I took the responsibility of ensuring effective communication between members as well as mentoring new members of the organization. I’ve also been involved with Senior Planet, where I provided one-on-one tutoring sessions to seniors, assisting them in resolving various technological issues. As part of the CCACC Youth Dragon Dance Team, I also led the dragon during practices, performances, and parades at events across the DMV area.
